The major complication of acute rheumatic fever is the development of rheumatic valvular heart disease. None of the other manifestations results in a chronic disease. The mitral valve is most frequently involved, but the aortic and tricuspid valves also may be affected. Usually, the tricuspid valve becomes involved only in patients who have significant mitral or aortic disease resulting in pulmonary hypertension.
